Piraeus

Everybody has heard of the port city Piraeus. It is the main port of Athens, since antiquity, as well as one of the most important ports globally.

The tour starts from Piraeus Port. Actually, there are three deep water harbours in Piraeus: the Central Port (Kantharos), the Port of Zea and Mikrolimano. Trouba neighbourhood is the heart of Piraeus nightlife, where you can enjoy any kind of music and choose from a variety of bars and clubs. Moreover, if you are fond of fish and sea food, you should eat at one of the famous taverns of Piraeus in Chatzikyriakeio or Mikrolimano.

The Hellenic Maritime Museum is located at Freattyda neighbourhood and in its halls are exhibited more than 2,500 objects sorted chronologically and thematically, evoking the maritime history and tradition from prehistoric times to the present day. In its exterior space sculptures and important outdoor exhibits are located such as the conning tower of the historic submarine “Papanikolis’ and anchors of the ships of the time of the Battle of Navarino, which sealed the fate of the Greek Independence War.

The Archaeological Museum of Piraeus hosts sculptures discovered in Piraeus and the coasts of Attica. The exhibits describe the history, period of prosperity and decline of the ancient city.

The Port of Zea consists of Marina Zeas and Pasalimani. This marina is the docking place for some of the most impressive yachts and cruisers. On the coast you can find many restaurants, taverns, bars and commercial stores which satisfy every passenger’s need.

Kastella, the most picturesque district of Piraeus, built on a 86 meters high hill that rises literally from the sea, covers the entire area around Mikrolimano, with old residences and mansions perched on the hillside. Kastella is a residential area, with many cafés and restaurants, offering visitors a superb view of Piraeus and the Saronic Gulf. In this neighbourhood you will also find the outdoor theatres “Veakio” and “Delfinareio”, which host cultural events regularly, especially in the summer.

Mikrolimano is a beautiful small port full of fishing boats, small ships and luxurious yachts. You can enjoy your food, coffee and drinks all day long, since there are many cafes, famous restaurants and bars for every taste.

A port city like Piraeus should have a successful Sailing Club. Piraeus Sailing Club has more than 700 full members who concentrate in boat types like Optimist, 420, 470, 49er, Lighting, Soling, Laser, Finn, and Europe.

Sports fans might want to visit both the Peace and Friendship Stadium and the Karaiskaki Stadium, where Olympiacos B.C. and Olympiacos F.C. play their home games respectively.
